Meet Joe Betterman

His Background.

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Joe Betterman grew up near Wrigley Field before discovering wrestling as a freshman at Lake View High School in 1998. Unlike many elite wrestlers who begin competing at a young age, Joe entered the sport with little experience. His first season was challenging, but through dedication, conditioning, and consistent training, he developed into one of the school's standout competitors.

By his senior year, Joe had become a two-time Illinois state qualifier, finishing sixth at the state championships. After graduating, he attended Northern Michigan University, where he trained at the U.S. Olympic Education Center under Bulgarian Olympian Ivan Ivanov. His development in Greco-Roman wrestling eventually brought him to Colorado Springs in 2008 to train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Joe went on to represent the United States at the 2007 and 2011 World Championships, win four U.S. Senior National titles, and capture the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials championship. In 2012, he joined the U.S. Army's World Class Athlete Program to continue competing internationally. After injuries brought his competitive career to an end in 2015, Joe transitioned into coaching. Today, he works alongside his wife, Deanna Betterman, developing young wrestlers through Betterman Elite in Colorado Springs.
